Somewhere in the brochure for every family resort there is a photograph of two parents on sun loungers, alone, looking untroubled. The children are elsewhere, in a building with the word club in its name, being someone else’s responsibility for four hours. That photograph is the entire product. Whether a hotel can actually deliver it is the only question that matters, and it has almost nothing to do with how many pools there are.
October half term falls on 26 to 30 October 2026 for most of England, which means most families take the same week and the good rooms are already going. This guide covers what actually makes a hotel work for families at the luxury end, where it is still warm in late October, and the properties we would book, sorted by the age of your children rather than by destination.
Almost all family hotel content is written as though the children are the only guests. This one applies a different test throughout: would the adults choose this hotel if they were travelling alone? If the answer is no, it is a resort with a crèche, not a good hotel.
The dates, and the regional variation that catches people out
For most of England, October half term 2026 runs Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, with schools breaking up on Friday 23 October and returning Monday 2 November.
It is not universal. Leicester and Leicestershire take the earlier week, 19 to 23 October. Bromley, Nottingham and Surrey run different patterns again, and academies and trusts set their own calendars regardless of the local authority. Scotland’s October break varies by council and frequently falls earlier.
Check your own school before you book anything, and if you have children at two different schools, check both. It is a five-minute job that occasionally saves a four-figure change fee.
What actually makes a hotel good for families
The kids’ club: childcare or a room with a television?
This is the largest single quality gap in the category and the hardest to see from a website.
A real kids’ club has a published age range, structured sessions, qualified staff, a proper ratio and hours long enough to be useful, which means covering both a morning and an afternoon block. A weak one is a supervised playroom that closes at four and requires a parent to remain on the property.
Ask three questions before booking: what are the operating hours, what is the staff-to-child ratio, and is it included or charged. The third answer varies more than people expect even at this price point.
Connecting rooms, and why you should book them early
Connecting rooms are the most requested and least guaranteed thing in family travel. Most hotels will not confirm them, only note the request, which is worthless in a sold-out half-term week.
The reliable options are a suite with a separate bedroom, a villa, or a hotel that will contractually confirm connecting rooms at the time of booking. Ask which of the three you are getting, in writing.
Dining that works at six and at nine
A hotel that only does dinner from seven thirty is a hotel that has not thought about families. What you want is either an early children’s service followed by a proper adult dinner, or genuinely flexible all-day dining. The second is rarer and better.
The adult test
Everything above is hygiene. The test that separates the good from the merely equipped: strip out the children and ask whether you would still want to stay there. Resorts that pass tend to have adults-only areas, serious restaurants and design that was not chosen for its resistance to sticky hands.
Short haul, where it is still warm in late October
Late October is the last usable week of the Mediterranean season and the first good week of the North African one.
Fairmont Taghazout Bay in Morocco, which we scored 8.9, is our strongest short-haul recommendation for this specific week and it passes the adult test comfortably. 155 rooms on the Atlantic coast north of Agadir, with kids’ and teens’ clubs that our reviewer noted allow parents to have dinner in peace. The design was described as a quiet, grown-up one that families somehow do not unbalance, which is precisely the balance most family resorts fail.
The seasonal detail that matters: heated pools keep the swimming going through winter, when the Atlantic itself is for the brave. In late October you get reliable warmth on land and a sea that is bracing rather than inviting. Plan around the pools.

The Gulf, which is the sweet spot for this week
Late October is when the Gulf becomes comfortable again after the summer, and the flight is manageable inside a week.
Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, scored 8.6, is our pick over the Dubai city hotels for a family week. 346 rooms in a low-rise Andalusian-Arabian palace on Al Maya Island, with a long private Gulf beach, several pools, a kids’ club and shallow water areas. Our reviewer’s phrase was that it is a proper beach resort rather than a city hotel with sand attached, and that families spread out easily. Forty-five minutes from the airport and just over an hour from Dubai, so a city day is available without living in one.

Long haul, if you have the full week and then some
Half term is five school days. With the weekends either side you have nine nights, which makes genuine long haul possible but tight.
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, which we scored 9.4, is the highest-scoring family-capable resort we have reviewed. 383 rooms across 15 beachfront acres, three pools, a complimentary kids’ club, Spago and Ferraro’s for the adults, and no resort fee, which is genuinely rare in Hawaii. Our reviewer’s note was that it handles honeymooners, families and anniversary couples simultaneously better than comparable resorts, which is exactly the adult test passing.
The honest caveat: Maui from the UK is a long way for nine nights, and the time difference is brutal with young children. This is a recommendation for families with teenagers, or for anyone able to add days either side.
Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda, scored 9.0, is the Caribbean option. The seasonal warning is real and worth stating plainly: the Atlantic hurricane season runs to the end of November, and late October sits inside it. The risk in any given week is low, the disruption if it lands is total. Take the insurance and check the cancellation terms before you pay.
Staying in the UK
The underrated option, particularly with younger children, because you remove flights, jet lag and airport queues from a five-day break.
Fairmont Windsor Park, scored 8.8, works well for this week. 200 rooms on 40 acres at Egham with a private lake, a kitchen garden and direct walking access into Windsor Great Park, plus one of the largest hotel spas in Britain for the adults. It is a polished new-build rather than a historic house, which for a family stay is arguably a virtue.
Carton House near Dublin, also 8.8, is the Irish equivalent at estate scale: a 1730s Palladian mansion on 1,100 acres with walking and cycling trails, twenty-five minutes from the airport. Our reviewer flagged it for families needing space to explore.

Booking well at this stage
Availability in late August is better than you think. The scramble is in September. Hotels also hold back inventory and release it late, so a property showing sold out now is frequently not.
Flights are the constraint, not the rooms. UK half-term seats sell out before resorts do. Secure the flight first, then the hotel.
Ask about the club before you ask about the room. Hours, ratio, age bands and whether it is included. If a hotel cannot answer those quickly, that is the answer.
The week before half term is materially cheaper. Whether taking children out of school for it is acceptable is a decision for you and your head teacher, and unauthorised absence can carry a penalty notice. We are noting the price difference, not advising you to do it.

Under five: stay in the UK. Fairmont Windsor Park or Carton House. Short journey, no time difference, and a spa for the adults.
Five to ten: Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah. Shallow water, a real kids’ club, a proper beach and a manageable flight.
Eleven to fifteen: Fairmont Taghazout Bay. Teens’ club, surf coast, and enough going on that they are not bored by day three.
Sixteen and over, or a bigger trip: Four Seasons Maui at Wailea, if you can stretch the days either side.

Is the Caribbean safe to book for late October? The Atlantic hurricane season runs to 30 November, so late October falls inside it. The probability of disruption in any given week is low but the consequences are severe. Buy proper insurance and check the hotel’s cancellation terms before paying.
Which resorts work for teenagers rather than toddlers? Ones with a separate teens’ club, watersports and something to do off the property. Fairmont Taghazout Bay is our pick on that basis. Toddler-focused resorts with shallow pools and early dining rarely hold a fifteen-year-old for five days.
How far in advance should I book half term? Ideally by early September for the same year. Flights go before hotels, so book the seats first. Late August still has genuine availability, particularly at properties holding back inventory.
