The luxury hotels in Los Angeles Hollywood fall into two groups, and confusing them is a common booking mistake. Group one sits on and just off Hollywood Boulevard: The Hollywood Roosevelt, Thompson Hollywood, W Hollywood, Kimpton Everly, The Godfrey and the rebranded Hollywood Volume. Group two sits three miles west on the Sunset Strip, in the separate city of West Hollywood: Sunset Tower Hotel, Chateau Marmont, The West Hollywood EDITION and The Sun Rose, where rates run higher and the restaurants draw locals as well as guests. Walk to the Dolby Theatre, or eat and sleep well. That is the trade.
Hollywood is not the luxury capital of Los Angeles, and no useful guide pretends otherwise. What it has is position: the studios, the Pantages, the Dolby Theatre, the Metro B Line and a run of rooftops with a clear sightline to the Hollywood sign, inside a few blocks. Below are the ten properties that justify a luxury rate there, with recent name changes and closures flagged.
Hollywood or West Hollywood? Decide this before you book
West Hollywood is its own incorporated city, not a district of Hollywood. From The Sun Rose at 8430 Sunset Boulevard to the W at 6250 Hollywood Boulevard is roughly three miles: twelve minutes at 7am, closer to half an hour at 6pm. Hollywood Boulevard is a dense tourist corridor built around the Walk of Fame. West Hollywood is residential, better on foot, and has the restaurant density visitors wrongly expect of Hollywood.
The rule: book Hollywood proper for tickets at the Dolby Theatre or the Pantages, a studio meeting in Burbank, or the Walk of Fame outside the door. Book West Hollywood if the trip is about food and a quieter room. Our Tokyo neighbourhood guide applies the same logic to a far bigger city.
Luxury hotels in Los Angeles Hollywood: the shortlist
The Hollywood Roosevelt
7000 Hollywood Boulevard, a short walk from the Dolby Theatre and Ovation Hollywood. Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin and Clark Gable all stayed. Yabu Pushelberg rebuilt the Tower interiors in a 25 million dollar renovation completed in 2021, and the 300 rooms sit alongside original Spanish Colonial Revival detail. Listed by Historic Hotels of America and in the MICHELIN Guide. Best for the address and the history. The caveat: it runs as a scene, the pool deck pulls heavy non-guest traffic at weekends, and rooms vary between the historic building and the Tower, so specify which you book.
Thompson Hollywood
1541 Wilcox Avenue, a block from Hollywood and Vine. Eleven storeys, 190 rooms including 16 suites, mid-century-referencing interiors, opened in 2021 and now sold within Hyatt. The reason to book is Bar Lis, the rooftop that launched with it: Riviera styling, cypress trees, a fountain, a straight view to the Hollywood sign and a pool. The dress code is enforced, and beachwear, t-shirts, sweatpants and flip-flops are refused. Best for design-led rooms and for rooftop access without leaving the building. The caveat: Bar Lis draws a large crowd, and it is not only guests.
W Hollywood
6250 Hollywood Boulevard, on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, directly above the Metro B Line station, so you can reach downtown or Universal City without a car. 305 rooms, plus Bliss Spa, Delphine Eatery and Bar, and Drai’s Hollywood on the rooftop pool terrace. Best for transport and for guests who want the nightclub in the building. The caveat is the same sentence: request a room away from the terrace.
Kimpton Everly Hotel
1800 Argyle Avenue, two blocks north of Hollywood Boulevard on the east side of Vine, beside the Capitol Records Tower. 216 rooms, a rooftop pool with cabana rentals, the Jane Q cafe and Written Hand bar, a 24-hour fitness centre running yoga, and Kimpton’s free evening reception. Five minutes on foot to Avalon Hollywood and the Hollywood/Vine Metro station, walkable to the Pantages. Michelin Guide listed. Best for what the rate includes: the rooftop pool, the fitness classes and the evening reception. The caveat: this is an upper-upscale lifestyle hotel, not a five-star service operation.
The Godfrey Hotel Hollywood
1400 North Cahuenga Boulevard, one block south of Sunset. The draw is I|O, a large rooftop on the seventh floor with two bars, a pool, fire pits, a projection wall and views from the Hollywood sign to downtown. ALK handles Southern Californian cooking at street level. Best for groups and for a trip built around a rooftop. The caveat: the venue business dominates, so weekend events shape the pool deck.
Hollywood Volume, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel
6516 Selma Avenue. If you searched for Tommie Hollywood and found nothing, this is why: the eight-storey, 212-room hotel reopened under Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio in October 2024 on the former Tommie site. KATEEN comes from chef Wes Avila, and Desert Five Spot is the rooftop pool lounge. Best for a room on a quieter street one block off the Boulevard, with the rooftop pool lounge downstairs. The caveat: it is still settling under the new name, and the food and drink is the stronger half.
Hollywood luxury hotels on the Sunset Strip
These four sit in West Hollywood, not Hollywood. Expect higher rates and fuller service.
Sunset Tower Hotel
The Art Deco block on the Strip, designed in 1929 by Leland A. Bryant, opened in 1931 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Tower Bar occupies Bugsy Siegel’s former apartment, walnut-panelled, with jazz pianists and a rooftop poolside terrace; bar, restaurant and pool were recently reworked and expanded. Sold through Virtuoso and listed in the MICHELIN Guide. Best for a grown-up evening away from the Boulevard crowds. The caveat: it is a bar and restaurant institution first, so the public rooms belong as much to locals as guests.
Chateau Marmont
The chateau above Sunset Boulevard, with bungalows and suites behind the main house. A 2020 announcement that it would convert to a members-only club drew heavy coverage; the plan was dropped, and it takes public bookings again. It appears in the MICHELIN Guide. Best for privacy, longer stays and the bungalows, which are the point. The caveat: consistency has never been the selling point, and part of the rate buys mythology rather than housekeeping.
The West Hollywood EDITION
9040 West Sunset Boulevard, on the corner of North Doheny Drive where West Hollywood meets Beverly Hills. The Roof is the rooftop pool, bar and restaurant, with views from downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific; below sit a signature restaurant, a lobby lounge, a basement club and a spa with six treatment rooms. Rated by Forbes Travel Guide and sold through Virtuoso. Best for consistent service and the rooftop. The caveat is geography: at the western end of the Strip, Hollywood proper is a drive.
The Sun Rose West Hollywood
8430 Sunset Boulevard, on the former House of Blues site. This was Pendry West Hollywood until the 2025 rebrand, so older reviews and some booking sites still carry the old name. 149 rooms with interiors by Martin Brudnizki, plus a rooftop pool, a spa, the Oleander and Yuhi restaurants, the Ritual lobby bar and Live at The Sun Rose, the music venue that named the hotel. It sells through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts and Preferred Hotels and Resorts. Best for the rooms and the music venue downstairs. The caveat is dining churn: Ospero and the Britely members club have both closed, and rooftop restaurant Merois closed in May 2026.
What Hollywood is like at street level
The Walk of Fame between Highland and Vine is a working tourist strip: costumed performers, souvenir shops, crowds and visible street homelessness, and it does not get more genteel after dark. It reads as busy rather than dangerous, but it is not what visitors picture when they book Hollywood. One block south the pace changes, which is why Thompson, The Godfrey and Hollywood Volume sit on Wilcox, Cahuenga and Selma instead.
Three practical points:
- Almost every Hollywood hotel adds an amenity fee plus valet parking, so compare the total, not the headline rate.
- The rooftops at the Roosevelt, Thompson, W, Kimpton Everly and The Godfrey all admit non-guests, so ask for a lower floor if you sleep lightly.
- Check pool access in writing. Several rooftops switch to ticketed events at weekends, and guest access is not always guaranteed.
When to go
Awards season, roughly January to early March, pushes rates up and disrupts Hollywood proper. The Academy Awards are held at the Dolby Theatre inside Ovation Hollywood, and the build-out closes stretches of Hollywood Boulevard for days around the ceremony.
Summer brings peak tourist volume and peak rooftop pricing. Late spring and early summer mornings often start grey under a marine layer that burns off by midday, which catches out visitors expecting all-day sun in May and June. September to November is the better bet: warm, drier, lower rates, rooftops still on full hours. Our guide to where to stay in Dubai takes the same seasonal approach.
How to book a Hollywood luxury hotel properly
Several of these properties sell through consortia programmes that add value at no extra cost. Sunset Tower Hotel and The West Hollywood EDITION appear in Virtuoso; The Sun Rose sells through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts and Preferred Hotels and Resorts. With the right card or advisor, the same rate usually carries breakfast, an upgrade subject to availability and a property credit. We compare the programmes in Virtuoso versus Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts.
The chain-affiliated options reward status instead. Thompson sits inside Hyatt, W inside Marriott, Kimpton Everly inside IHG, and Hollywood Volume is a Marriott Tribute Portfolio property, so elite recognition is worth more here than at a stand-alone hotel. Frequently asked questions
Is Hollywood a good area to stay in Los Angeles?
Good if your trip is built around the theatres, the studios or the Metro, because it puts you within walking distance of the Dolby Theatre and the Pantages and on the Metro B Line. It is a weak choice if you want to walk to good restaurants at night; West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica all have dinner within walking distance of their hotels. Visitors staying a week often split nights between Hollywood and the Westside.
Which luxury hotel in Hollywood should you book?
For the address and the history, The Hollywood Roosevelt on Hollywood Boulevard. For design-led rooms and a rooftop with a sign view inside Hollywood proper, Thompson Hollywood on Wilcox Avenue. Three miles west on the Sunset Strip, Sunset Tower Hotel and The West Hollywood EDITION run higher rates with fuller service.
Is it better to stay in Hollywood or West Hollywood?
West Hollywood has the denser restaurant scene, fuller service and quieter nights; Hollywood puts the Dolby Theatre, the Pantages and the Walk of Fame within walking distance. They are about three miles apart along Sunset Boulevard, so neither locks you out of the other, though the drive can take half an hour in evening traffic.
Do you need a car if you stay in Hollywood?
Not as much as in most of Los Angeles, but probably yes. The Metro B Line runs beneath Hollywood Boulevard with stations at Hollywood/Highland and Hollywood/Vine, and W Hollywood sits above the latter, covering downtown and Universal City. For the beaches, Beverly Hills and most restaurants worth the trip you will still need a car or a ride-hail.
When do Hollywood hotel rates peak?
Awards season, January to early March, around the Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre, when nearby hotels charge their top rates and street closures affect access. Summer school holidays are the second peak. September to November gives a good mix of weather and rates.
