The best luxury hotels in Los Angeles sit in four areas, and choosing the right area matters a great deal here. Beverly Hills and Bel-Air hold the long-established service hotels, Santa Monica puts you on the sand, West Hollywood keeps you walking distance from the Sunset Strip, and Downtown works for culture and business. The Maybourne Beverly Hills and The Peninsula Beverly Hills are the two all-rounders on this list. Book Hotel Bel-Air for privacy, Regent Santa Monica Beach for the ocean, and Sunset Tower Hotel for old Hollywood at a lower profile.
Los Angeles has no single centre, so traffic decides how a trip feels. A hotel 12 miles from your dinner reservation can be 50 minutes away at 7pm. The list below is grouped by neighbourhood, then by traveller type, and every property named is open and taking bookings as of September 2026.
Best luxury hotels in Los Angeles at a glance
- The Maybourne Beverly Hills – best all-rounder.
- The Peninsula Beverly Hills – best service, and the safest bet.
- Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills – best views, from a rooftop pool and bar.
- The Beverly Hills Hotel – best for bungalows and Hollywood history.
- Hotel Bel-Air – best for privacy, on gardens above Stone Canyon Road.
- Regent Santa Monica Beach – best for oceanfront rooms on this list.
- Shutters on the Beach – best for families who want the sand.
- Sunset Tower Hotel – best for West Hollywood without a scene at breakfast.
- The Sun Rose West Hollywood – best for nightlife and music.

How we ranked them
These rankings weigh service consistency, location against what guests actually do here, and food and drink that locals also use. We checked that every hotel is trading and that the restaurants and spas named are still operating. More on how we assess hotels, and for wider context, the 2026 World’s 50 Best Hotels list.
Beverly Hills and Bel-Air
This is where the money and the long-established service hotels still are. Beverly Hills is walkable in a way most of LA is not, which is the practical reason to pay for it. Bel-Air trades walkability for seclusion.
The Maybourne Beverly Hills
The Maybourne sits on North Canon Drive, two minutes on foot from Rodeo Drive, and it is run by the group behind Claridge’s and The Connaught, which shows in how staff handle detail. There is a rooftop terrace with cabanas by the pool, a garden and a spa, and Dante, the New York cocktail bar, runs the rooftop as Dante Beverly Hills. It holds a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for 2026, its second consecutive year. Rates sit at the top of the market here.
The Peninsula Beverly Hills
The Peninsula has held both Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond status for decades, and it has recently completed a refresh of rooms and public areas. There are 195 rooms, including 38 suites and 17 villas set among gardens, so you can have a private entrance and your own patio. The Belvedere handles serious dining, afternoon tea runs daily in The Living Room, and the roof garden holds the pool and cabanas. Expect an older, quieter crowd than the Maybourne rooftop draws.
Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills
The view hotel. On Wilshire Boulevard a short walk from Rodeo Drive, it stacks its best spaces on the roof: a 12th-floor pool with sightlines to the Hollywood Hills, and Gemma, a rooftop restaurant and pool bar that is busy at sunset. Baldi covers Tuscan steakhouse territory downstairs, and the spa uses La Prairie. It is a Forbes Five-Star property. Rooms run on the smaller side for the money, so book it for the roof.
The Beverly Hills Hotel
The pink hotel on Sunset Boulevard is the stay people book for the story: 210 rooms and suites plus 23 bungalows, the Polo Lounge for breakfast meetings, the Fountain Coffee Room counter and the Cabana Cafe by the pool. Those three stay as they are while the hotel adds five new dining and evening spaces beside the lobby entrance. Two things to know: Rodeo Drive is a short drive rather than a walk, and bungalows cost multiples of a standard room. It belongs to Dorchester Collection, as does Hotel Bel-Air.
Hotel Bel-Air
The privacy pick. Hotel Bel-Air has 103 rooms and suites across 12 acres of gardens on Stone Canyon Road, minutes from Beverly Hills but invisible from the street, which is why it suits guests who would rather not be seen arriving. Swan Lake, with swans and a hundred-year-old sycamore, is the centre of the grounds. There is a 25-metre heated oval pool, a spa, and Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air. You will need a car or a driver for everything, and the canyon means cool evenings even in summer.
Santa Monica and the beach
Stay here if your trip is about the ocean, the beach path and easy dinners. The trade-off is real: Santa Monica to Downtown is a 40 to 70 minute drive at the wrong hour, and coastal mornings are often grey from the marine layer in late spring and early summer.
Regent Santa Monica Beach
Regent opened this oceanfront property on Ocean Avenue in autumn 2024. The pool deck faces the water with fire pits for the evening, Orla handles the main restaurant, and the spa operates as Guerlain Wellness. Beach cruiser bikes are included for the ride down to Venice, and Santa Monica Pier is a short walk.
Shutters on the Beach
The Santa Monica default for families, and it has earned that. Shutters opened in 1993 with 186 rooms, and you can walk barefoot from the lobby to the water. The style is Cape Cod beach house rather than big-city luxury, the bars and restaurants pull local trade, and staff are used to buckets, prams and sandy children. Rooms vary: an ocean-front room with a balcony is a different hotel to a city-view room at the back.
West Hollywood
A strong base if your plans involve restaurants, music and late nights, because you can walk to a decent share of them. It is also close to Beverly Hills and the canyon roads.
Sunset Tower Hotel
An Art Deco tower on Sunset Boulevard that keeps its grip on the industry crowd without turning into a nightclub. Rooms read old Hollywood, and The Tower Bar works as a restaurant in its own right rather than a captive-audience dining room. The pool terrace is small and looks south over the basin. There is no vast spa and no shopping attached, which is rather the point.
The Sun Rose West Hollywood
The Sun Rose runs a whole block of the Sunset Strip at 8430 Sunset Boulevard, and it is a West Hollywood address to book if going out is the point of the trip. The rooftop holds the pool and a bar, there is a spa and a gym, and dining runs across Oleander for the main restaurant, Yuhi for sushi, The Pool for daytime eating and the Ritual Lobby Bar for drinks. Live at The Sun Rose puts on music on site. It traded as Pendry West Hollywood before the rebrand, so older reviews and booking links still carry that name. The rooms run small for long stays, so treat it as a three or four night hotel.
Downtown Los Angeles
Conrad Los Angeles
The one to book if your trip involves the Music Center, MOCA, the Colburn School or Financial District meetings. It opened in 2022 inside The Grand LA on Bunker Hill, across the street from Walt Disney Concert Hall. There are 305 rooms, a spa, a rooftop pool, and San Laurel for dining. Know what Downtown is at night before booking: rougher at street level than Beverly Hills, and this is a hotel you retreat into.
Which Los Angeles neighbourhood should you stay in?
- First visit, shopping, service – Beverly Hills. Walkable and close to the Westside.
- Beach, running, children – Santa Monica. Accept the drive time going east.
- Restaurants, music, nightlife – West Hollywood. You can walk to dinner from most of the Strip.
- Concerts, museums, business – Downtown. Excellent for Bunker Hill, poor for everything west.
- Total privacy – Bel-Air. Budget for a driver.
Best luxury hotels in Los Angeles by traveller type
Couples on a first trip together do best at The Maybourne Beverly Hills, where you can walk to dinner and still get a rooftop. For an anniversary, Hotel Bel-Air has the garden suites and the grounds around them. Families should look at Shutters on the Beach first and Regent Santa Monica Beach second, both for the sand and because neither treats children as a problem. Business travellers with meetings Downtown should stay at Conrad Los Angeles rather than commute in. Anyone in town for a concert or a late industry dinner belongs at Sunset Tower Hotel or The Sun Rose West Hollywood, and the choice is how much noise you want.
If you tend to pick a district before a hotel, the same logic applies here as in our Tokyo neighbourhood guide: in a sprawling city, the address decides the holiday.
When to go, and what to expect on price
September and October are the reliable months. Days are warm, the marine layer that greys out coastal mornings in late spring and early summer has usually cleared, and the city sits between its two demand spikes. Rates rise around awards season in the first quarter, and Beverly Hills and West Hollywood sell out early in that stretch.
We do not publish nightly rates because LA moves too fast on price, but the pattern holds. Beverly Hills five-stars command the highest rack rates, Santa Monica prices on ocean views rather than service, West Hollywood is cheaper midweek than at weekends, and Downtown is the best value of the areas covered here. Most of these hotels sit in agency or card programmes, so read up on Virtuoso versus Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts before booking direct. On a four-night stay, breakfast for two plus a property credit can beat a rate discount.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best luxury hotel in Los Angeles overall?
The Maybourne Beverly Hills is our first pick for most travellers, because it pairs a walkable Beverly Hills address with the standards of the group behind Claridge’s and The Connaught, and it holds a Forbes Five-Star rating for 2026. If service consistency matters above all else, The Peninsula Beverly Hills has held Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond status for decades.
Do I need a car to stay at these hotels?
Not always, but you need a plan. Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and Santa Monica work on foot plus ride-hailing for most trips, while Hotel Bel-Air realistically needs a car or a car service. Parking is valet-only and charged nightly, so for a short stay rides often work out cheaper than hiring.
Which Los Angeles luxury hotel is best for families?
Shutters on the Beach, because you walk straight from the lobby onto Santa Monica beach and the staff are used to children. Regent Santa Monica Beach opened on the same stretch of coast in 2024, with an oceanfront pool deck and bikes included. Both put you on the sand, unlike a Beverly Hills room where the pool sits on the roof.
How far in advance should I book a luxury hotel in Los Angeles?
Three to four months is enough for most of the year, and six months or more for the first quarter, when awards season lifts demand. Bungalows at The Beverly Hills Hotel and villas at The Peninsula Beverly Hills are limited in number and go earliest.
Is Downtown or the Westside better for a first trip to Los Angeles?
The Westside, meaning Beverly Hills, West Hollywood or Santa Monica. It puts you near the beach, the shopping, the canyon drives and a dense run of restaurants. Downtown is the better base only if your reason for visiting is at Bunker Hill, Crypto.com Arena or a Financial District office, in which case Conrad Los Angeles is the pick.
