The first thing JOALI presents to arriving guests is a manta ray. The arrival jetty on Muravandhoo Island is shaped like one, reaching out over the lagoon, and it sets the terms for everything after. Most Maldivian resorts sell sand, water and silence. JOALI sells those too, but its real pitch is art, and the island is laid out so that guests keep running into it.
That is what makes JOALI worth singling out in a crowded field. Since opening in 2018 as the Maldives’ first art-immersive resort, it has treated an entire private island as a gallery, and it pairs that idea with large pool villas, serious family facilities and one of the atoll’s more ambitious dining programs. The MICHELIN Guide named it a One-Key hotel for 2026, and Forbes Travel Guide has rated it Five-Star for five consecutive years.
Artscape: an island designed to be explored
What sets JOALI apart is Artscape, a collection of installations spread around the island and meant to be used as much as looked at. The curators pair international artists with local craft. There is sculptural seating, woven work and the Manta Treehouse, a manta-shaped structure raised above the ground that doubles as a place for breakfast or a private dinner. Adults can take an art tour. Each villa has its own pieces, so the gallery continues indoors.
The idea works on two levels. For adults it gives a beach holiday some cultural content. For children it turns the island into something to discover, which is part of why JOALI has become a family favorite without feeling like a family resort.

Getting to the Raa Atoll
JOALI is around 45 minutes north of Malé by seaplane. Staff meet guests at the airport and take them to a private JOALI Lounge before the flight. Seaplanes fly in daylight only: transfers can be arranged for international arrivals landing at Velana International Airport between 6 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Malé time, and departures need a flight after 9 a.m. Anyone landing later will need a night near the airport, so it is worth checking before booking flights.
One practical note: since July 1, 2026, the island runs on its own Island Time, GMT+6, an hour ahead of Malé.
Seventy-three villas, every one with a pool
All 73 villas and residences have private pools, and every guest is assigned a Jadugar, which JOALI translates as “magician,” the island’s word for a private butler. The entry Water Villa with Pool has 100 square meters inside, in 240 square meters overall. The Beach Villa with Pool has a 108-square-meter interior set in a private beach garden of 680 square meters in total. Step up to the Luxury categories and guests gain a separate living room and a small curated library. The Luxury Sunset Water Villa faces west over a 35-square-meter infinity pool.

Which villa to book
The choice between water and beach is the first decision, and our guide to overwater versus beach villas in the Maldives sets out the trade-offs. At JOALI, couples will get the most from the Luxury Sunset Water Villa, where the upgrade buys a separate living room and a west-facing pool. Families with young children usually do better on the beach, where the garden gives space to play and there is no ladder to the lagoon.
For families and groups
JOALI has put real money into space for groups. Two-bedroom villas sit both on the beach and over the water, and the Two Bedroom Family Beach Villa has two pools. The Three Bedroom Ocean Residence covers 990 square meters with two infinity pools. The duplex Four Bedroom Beach Residence reaches 1,200 square meters and comes with a room for the Jadugar and its own buggy and driver.
Dining, from Nikkei to the Levant
JOALI lists five dining options, and the two headline rooms both carry Michelin-starred names. Saoke, the overwater Nikkei restaurant designed by the Japanese architect Noriyoshi Muramatsu, serves menus curated by multi-Michelin-starred chef Kazuo Takagi. Bellinis, the Italian fine-dining room, works with Michelin-starred chef Theodor Falser. Both open on selected evenings, so they need booking early in a stay.
Vandhoo covers breakfast and dinners drawing on Southeast Asian, Chinese and Indian cooking. TUH’U serves Levantine dishes outdoors on the sand under the palms. Mura Bar handles lunch and sundowners by the pool, with a whisky and cigar lounge inside and a daily Ruinart Champagne hour. La Joie makes chocolate and ice cream by hand, in 30 flavors. Beyond the restaurants, the resort sets up barbecues on a private sandbank, brunch in the chef’s garden and cooking classes for every age.
Wellness, borrowed from the sister island
Spa treatments draw on JOALI BEING, the brand’s dedicated wellbeing resort nearby. On JOALI Maldives, the JOALI BEING Cure Wellness Centre offers massages, facials and longer tailored journeys, along with rituals from visiting practitioners. Day trips to JOALI BEING can be arranged, with availability confirmed on the day.
The reef and the atoll
The Raa Atoll is half the reason to come. JOALI points to its corals, turtles and manta rays, and to 38 dive sites between 15 minutes and an hour from the island, with PADI courses for beginners and experienced divers. The resort says it has planted more than 10,000 coral fragments on its house reef over two years, and its dive program is built around marine conservation.

How it compares
The Maldives has no shortage of polished private islands; our roundup of the best private island resorts covers several. JOALI’s advantage is character. Where many rivals compete on villa size and spa menus alone, JOALI gives guests something to do and talk about on land, and its sister island adds a wellness option few competitors can match.
The trade-offs: the Muramas Kids Club, open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for ages one to twelve, means children are part of island life, so couples seeking an adults-only atmosphere should look at our guide to adults-only honeymoon resorts. The daylight-only seaplane window can also add a night in Malé to some itineraries. Drones are banned, for privacy.
Who should stay
JOALI Maldives suits families who want a resort with real cultural content, multigenerational groups who need residences rather than rooms, and couples who care about design and food. It is a strong choice for a first trip to the Maldives, when the art and dining keep a week varied.

The Final Word
Plenty of Maldivian resorts are beautiful. JOALI is one of the few with an idea, and it has built the whole island around it. For families and couples who want a beach holiday with something to discover between swims, that idea is the reason to choose it.
