Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi Review

A vast, polished private-island flagship with private-pool villas and standout dining, a benchmark Maldives blowout thirty minutes from Male.

By The Editors

Overview

Waldorf Astoria’s Maldives flagship spreads across a private island in the South Male Atoll, about a thirty-minute speedboat run from Velana International Airport at Male, which keeps the transfer simple and skips the seaplane schedule. Opened in 2019, it counts 122 villas, beach and overwater, every one with a private pool, plus a separate multi-bedroom private island for those who want to buy out the whole thing. It is one of the largest and most lavish resorts in the country, built for honeymoons, milestone trips and unashamed indulgence.

The dining is the headline, spread across a string of distinct restaurants: The Ledge by Dave Pynt of Singapore’s Burnt Ends for open-fire cooking, Terra’s treetop pods, Li Veli for Italian, Amime for Japanese and Yasmeen for Middle Eastern, among others. An overwater spa runs to more than twenty treatment rooms, and the house reef, a kids’ club, watersports and a butler for every villa complete the picture. Villas are vast, with sundecks, private pools and interiors in pale timber and stone.

Book it when budget is not the deciding factor and you want space, choice and privacy over a small, barefoot hideaway. It is not intimate in scale, and the bill climbs quickly once you add flights and dining, but few resorts in the Maldives match its range or polish. For a blowout honeymoon or a special family fortnight, it is a benchmark.

Why We Love It

Lavish, generous and family-friendly rather than tiny and barefoot. This is a big resort by Maldivian standards, so it offers choice and buzz rather than the hush of a twenty-villa hideaway. Honeymooners, families and groups all fit, helped by the spread of restaurants and bars and the villa-per-butler service. The short speedboat transfer keeps arrival relaxed. If you want somewhere small and intimate, look elsewhere; if you want range and polish, this delivers.

Rooms & Suites

122 villas, split between beachfront and overwater, all with a private pool, sundeck and direct water or beach access. They are large and beautifully finished in pale timber, stone and glass, with indoor-outdoor bathrooms and plenty of lounging space. Overwater villas give you steps into the lagoon; beach villas suit families. Sizes climb through multi-bedroom villas up to a dedicated private island. Every category feels indulgent.

Dining

Emphatically. Dining is the resort's calling card, from The Ledge by Dave Pynt's open-fire cooking to Terra's treetop dining pods, Li Veli for Italian, Amime for Japanese and Yasmeen for Middle Eastern, plus bars and in-villa dining. Quality is high across the board, which matters when you are captive on an island. A half-board or dining plan is worth costing out, as paying a la carte across a stay adds up quickly.

Spa & Wellness

The overwater spa is one of the largest in the Maldives, with more than twenty treatment rooms, hydrotherapy and a full menu of massages, facials and rituals, several designed for couples. Sitting over the lagoon, it is a serene way to fill a slow afternoon. Book signature treatments and couples' rooms early in your stay, as they fill up, and leave time for the thermal facilities.

Location

Snorkel the house reef and book a sunset dolphin cruise; the short speedboat transfer means you can arrive and be in the water the same afternoon rather than waiting on a seaplane.
