Thatched overwater arrival pavilion on a timber jetty in the Maldives

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands Review

Kerry Hill's minimalist rings bring rare architectural discipline to the Maldives, and the lagoon does the rest.

Overview

The Maldives does not reward architects. Most resorts here are interchangeable: thatch, teak, a swing photographed at sunset. The Ritz-Carlton’s Fari Islands outpost is the exception, because the late Kerry Hill’s studio drew it as a series of perfect circles, ring-shaped villas of pale timber and glass that sit on the lagoon like instruments rather than huts. It should feel cold. In practice the geometry does the opposite, wrapping each villa around its own pool and framing the water at every turn.

There are 100 villas, all with pools, split between overwater rings and beach houses tucked into replanted vegetation. The island is part of the Fari Islands development in North Male Atoll, 45 minutes from the airport by speedboat, which means no seaplane weight limits and no waiting lounge purgatory. A shared marina village next door adds restaurants and shops without cluttering the resort itself.

Service runs on the Aris Meeha butler system, one per villa, and it works: our transfers, dinner moves and a forgotten snorkel fin were all handled by message with nothing repeated twice. Dining stretches to seven venues, from a serious Italian at La Locanda to grilled fish at Beach Shack. The spa occupies its own ring over the water and is worth a half day. It is not the cheapest island in the atoll, but it is one of very few where the design alone justifies the boat ride.

Why We Love It

Calmer and more grown-up than the brand name suggests. The architecture sets the tone: clean lines, no clutter, staff who glide rather than hover. Guests are a mix of design-aware couples, honeymooners and families who keep to the beach side. Evenings centre on the sunset bar and the marina village next door, so the island itself stays quiet after dark.

Rooms & Suites

The circular plan is not a gimmick. Beds face the water through curved glass, bathrooms open to private decks, and every villa has its own pool with proper depth rather than a plunge puddle. Overwater rings get the postcard views; the beach villas trade them for gardens and direct sand access, and suit families better. Book sunset side if you can.

Dining

Seven venues is a lot for 100 villas and quality holds up. La Locanda does hand-made pasta and a proper wine list, Iwau turns out precise Japanese, and Beach Shack grills the day's catch with your feet in the sand. Breakfast at La Locanda is generous rather than showy. The marina village adds outside options, a rarity in the Maldives, including a good bakery.

Spa & Wellness

A ring of its own over the lagoon, run with Bamford products and therapists who actually adjust pressure when asked. The signature grounding treatments lean on sound and breathwork without tipping into theatre. Book the sunset slot in an overwater room and add the hammam. It is among the best-designed spa buildings in the atolls, and it photographs nowhere near as well as it feels.

Location

Take the dhoni out at first light for the manta cleaning stations north of the atoll, then claim a sandbank breakfast before the wind picks up. In the evening, walk the pontoon to Fari Marina Village: the bakery does a laminated pastry worth breaking any resolution for, and the beach club stays lively after the island goes quiet.

The Verdict

Design-minded travellers who find classic Maldivian thatch a bit syrupy, couples who want quiet without an adults-only policy, and families who value the Ritz Kids programme and speedboat access. If you want a big house-party scene or the cheapest overwater bed in the atoll, look elsewhere; this island trades volume for discipline and prices accordingly.
