Fairmont’s Indian city debut plants 446 rooms and suites directly beside Terminal 2 of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, and the honest first note is what this hotel is not: it is nowhere near the Gateway of India, Colaba or Marine Drive, whatever the brochure poetry implies. Judge it on its own brief, a glamorous machine for arrivals, departures and events, and it scores high.
The design chases 1920s Fairmont glamour with chandeliers and acres of marble, and the newness works: everything gleams, and the staff have opening-team energy. Rooms are quiet despite the runway, with big windows over city, pool or apron, plush beds and proper desks; Fairmont Gold adds butler service and a lounge that suits long layovers. Light sleepers should still request higher floors away from the apron side.
Five restaurants and bars cover Indian and international cooking with a breakfast built for jet lag, the Blu Xone Spa and 24-hour gym handle recovery, and an outdoor pool is a small miracle this close to a terminal. The grand ballroom takes more than 2,000 guests and has already made the hotel a wedding and conference fixture. For a red-eye sandwich, a business trip on the airport corridor or a celebration at scale, it is the strongest opening Mumbai’s airport district has seen.
