Fairmont Jakarta Review

Confident big-city Fairmont: a tall marble lobby, orchids by the metre, and a steady traffic of suits, wedding parties and weekending Jakarta families. It runs on efficiency rather than charm, but the Indonesian warmth of the staff keeps it from feeling corporate-cold, and the pool deck on a Saturday is more resort than boardroom. Nobody comes here for intimacy; they come because everything works, and in Jakarta traffic that is worth real money.

Big for the category and bigger than the rate suggests: floor-to-ceiling glass, proper seating areas, marble bathrooms with soaking tubs and walk-in showers, and beds built for jet lag. The choice that matters is the view. Golf-course rooms give you green space and sunsets over Senayan; skyline rooms deliver the full towers-and-traffic spectacle. Suites are worth the step up for the executive lounge alone, which handles breakfast, tea and evening drinks with unusual generosity.

Enough to cover a short stay well. Lyon does French-accented cooking with an Indonesian pantry and a strong business-lunch trade; the teppanyaki counter supplies dinner-as-performance; and K22 mixes serious cocktails against a skyline that flatters everyone photographed in front of it. Breakfast is a sprawling, properly Indonesian affair, and the lobby lounge handles coffee and cakes. That said, Senayan's malls next door hide some of Jakarta's best restaurants, and we would split the difference.

Willow Stream is a dependable full-service operation: massages, facials and body treatments in calm rooms, with sauna and steam attached and therapists who take Indonesian massage tradition seriously rather than defaulting to spa-generic. The adjoining fitness centre is large, current and open around the clock. The outdoor pool is the real amenity, resort-scaled with a sun deck and cabanas, and swimming laps against the towers at dusk is the hotel's best moment.

Walk to Gelora Bung Karno at dusk, when half of Jakarta turns the stadium precinct into a running track and street-food market. Plaza Senayan and Senayan City cover serious shopping within ten minutes on foot. With a free morning, take a car to Kota Tua, the old Dutch quarter, before the heat builds, and finish with es cendol in Glodok, the city's Chinatown.

Business travellers, obviously, and they are well served: location, lounge, and rooms you can actually work in. But it earns its second audience, stopover and weekend guests, with the pool, the spa and walk-to-everything shopping. Families do better here than at most city five-stars thanks to the room sizes. Anyone hunting boutique character, colonial romance or a quiet retreat should look elsewhere; this is a machine for living well in a difficult city.
