Booking.com’s Genius programme is the least glamorous discount in luxury travel and one of the most reliable. It is free, it is automatic, and more five-star hotels participate than their brand managers like to admit.
The mechanics: complete two stays in two years and you reach Level 2, which unlocks 10 to 15 per cent off participating properties plus occasional free breakfast. Fifteen stays lifts you to Level 3, where discounts stretch to 20 per cent and priority support comes with it. The discounts apply to the room rate before taxes and stack quietly on top of seasonal pricing, which is where the real value hides at the luxury end: 15 per cent off a 900 pound suite is serious money.
Two caveats from our own bookings. First, always compare the Genius rate against booking direct, because hotels increasingly reserve upgrades and flexible cancellation for their own channels. Second, check which rate plans carry the discount; the cheapest non-refundable rate is usually the one excluded. Used knowingly, Genius is the rare loyalty scheme that costs nothing and pays often.
