Barcelona hotels love a backstory, and Hotel Bagués has one of the best: the building at La Rambla 105 housed the Bagués-Masriera firm, jewellers whose Art Nouveau pieces defined the glittering edge of Catalan Modernisme. Derby Hotels Collection, whose properties double as private museums, restored it into a 31-room boutique where cases of original Masriera jewellery sit in the lounge and the interiors play the jewel-box theme straight: dark lacquered surfaces, gold leaf, bronze and low, glamorous light.
Rooms trade size for finish, with glossy joinery, marble bathrooms with rainfall showers, and blackout that matters this close to the street. La Rambla-facing rooms have balconies and the theatre of the boulevard; interior rooms sleep better. Upstairs, the roof terrace holds a plunge pool and daybeds with a sightline across the rooftops towards the port, a genuine rarity in a hotel this small.
The location is the sales pitch and the caveat in one. The Boqueria market is two minutes north, the Liceu opera house a minute south, and the Gothic Quarter and Raval spread out on either side, but La Rambla itself is pickpocket country and rarely quiet. Treat the hotel as a beautifully soundproofed base camp, breakfast in the Boqueria and eat in the Raval at night, and the address becomes an asset. Couples ticking off Barcelona’s greatest hits will struggle to be better placed.
