Modern hotel suite with a warm wood-lit ceiling and city view at dusk

Waldorf Astoria Berlin Review

A polished City West landmark with large rooms, a great bar and one of Berlin's best hotel spas, wrongly sold as Mitte.

Overview

Despite the old marketing that files it under Mitte, the Waldorf Astoria Berlin stands firmly in Charlottenburg, in the City West district, inside the Zoofenster tower on Hardenbergstrasse. It opened in 2013, a new-build skyscraper rather than a converted 1920s bank, and rises above Bikini Berlin, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the western end of the Kurfurstendamm. With 232 rooms and suites, it is a proper big-city luxury hotel aimed at travellers who prefer leafy, well-heeled City West to the tourist churn around Museum Island.

The interiors nod to Art Deco and the original New York Waldorf, all dark wood, brass and a dramatic double-height Lang Bar that is one of Berlin’s better hotel bars. The sixth-floor Guerlain Spa is the highlight, a thousand square metres with a proper pool, saunas and a fitness suite that earns its keep on a grey Berlin afternoon. Dining runs through the hotel’s restaurant and the Peacock Alley lounge for afternoon tea, with the Ku’damm’s own restaurants and the KaDeWe food hall minutes away.

Book it for City West rather than for walking to the Brandenburg Gate, which is a short U-Bahn ride east. Rooms are large, quiet and well insulated from the busy street, service is polished, and the spa lifts it above most of its Berlin rivals. It is a grown-up, comfortable base in the smartest part of the old West.

Why We Love It

Polished, grown-up and distinctly City West. This is the smart, moneyed side of the old West Berlin, all boutiques and the Ku'damm rather than gritty east-side cool, and the hotel matches it with a clubby, Art Deco mood. Guests are a mix of business travellers, couples and well-off tourists who would rather not be in the Mitte crush. Service is formal without being stiff, and the Lang Bar gives it a genuine evening buzz.

Rooms & Suites

Large by Berlin standards, quiet and well insulated from Hardenbergstrasse, with dark wood, generous marble bathrooms and City West views that improve with height. The Deco-influenced design is warm rather than cold. Suites are excellent, some with wraparound windows over the church and the Ku'damm. Ask for a higher floor for the outlook and to put distance between you and the busy street below.

Spa & Wellness

The sixth-floor Guerlain Spa is the reason many people book, a thousand square metres of pool, saunas, steam and treatment rooms with Guerlain products, plus a well-equipped gym. It is one of the better hotel spas in the city and a real asset in winter. Book treatments ahead, especially at weekends, as it is popular with non-residents too.

Location

Walk the western Ku'damm and the KaDeWe food hall, then hop the U-Bahn two stops to Zoologischer Garten or east to the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island.

The Verdict

Couples and business travellers who want luxury, space and a spa in the calmer, smarter half of Berlin, and are happy to ride two U-Bahn stops for the classic Mitte sights. It suits repeat visitors who already know the city. First-timers set on walking to the Brandenburg Gate might prefer a Mitte address, but they would trade down on rooms and spa to get it.
