The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton Hotel, is Alabama’s eco-flagship on the coast, and it earns the label. Set directly on the Gulf at 21196 East Beach Boulevard in Gulf Shores, inside the 6,150-acre Gulf State Park, it was rebuilt to serious sustainability standards and is certified LEED Gold, part of a wider effort to restore this stretch of shoreline. The building itself is coastal-modern and low-slung, using reclaimed timber, glass and dune grass, with roughly 350 rooms looking out over either the beach or Lake Shelby behind.
The setting is the selling point. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail runs 28 miles from the door through six distinct ecosystems, the freshwater swimming of Lake Shelby is inside the park, and the Gulf State Park Pier, one of the longest on the Gulf of Mexico, is a short walk along the sand. On site there is an outdoor pool, a nature centre, the Tides restaurant and the Perch rooftop bar, plus a fitness centre and easy beach access.
This is not a glossy luxury resort and does not try to be; it is a well-run, environmentally serious lodge in a genuinely special natural setting. For families and active travellers who want beach, trails and wildlife over nightlife and marble lobbies, it is the most interesting place to stay on the Alabama coast.
