The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston Review

Texas maximalism done properly: the only Forbes double five-star in the state, with the steakhouse, spa and helipad to prove it.

Overview

First, a correction, because half the internet gets it wrong: The Post Oak is not a Hilton. It is the independent passion project of Landry’s owner Tilman Fertitta, a 38-storey tower at 1600 West Loop South in Uptown, and the only hotel in Texas to hold Forbes five stars for both the hotel and its spa. The tone is set early: the building houses Post Oak Motorcars, a Rolls-Royce and Bentley showroom that doubles as lobby-level art, and the roof carries Houston’s only hotel helipad.

The 250 rooms and suites are among the largest entry-level rooms in the city, dressed in marble, bronze and dark timber, with floor-to-ceiling windows over the Uptown skyline. Mastro’s Steakhouse and Willie G’s seafood anchor the dining line-up alongside Bloom & Bee, the pretty all-day restaurant, and Bouchee, the lobby patisserie. The spa carries its own five stars, and the pool deck with cabanas gives the tower a resort gear it does not strictly need but wears well.

Uptown is Houston’s shopping quarter, and the hotel sits in the thick of it: the Galleria’s 400-plus stores are minutes away, downtown’s theatre district is a 15-minute drive and the Museum District about twenty. This is glossy, unapologetic Texas luxury, closer in spirit to Las Vegas than to a discreet European grand hotel, and it executes at a level no other hotel in the city currently matches.

— Luxury Hotel Reviews

Why We Love It

Big, shiny and proudly Texan. Marble floors, towering flower arrangements and supercars in the lobby showroom set the register: this is exuberant American luxury run with genuine warmth rather than starch. Galleria shoppers, oil executives and wedding parties share the bar, and nobody is here to whisper. It is a spectacle, knowingly so.

Rooms & Suites

Entry-level rooms are among the biggest in Houston and feel residential: dark timber, bronze detailing, deep marble bathrooms with soaking tubs and double vanities, and windows from floor to ceiling. The technology is thorough without being fiddly. Suites scale up to full apartments with sweeping Uptown views; light sleepers should request a high floor away from the West Loop.

Dining

This is a Landry's flagship, so the restaurants are half the point: Mastro's Steakhouse for the full American steak ritual, Willie G's for Gulf seafood, Bloom & Bee for pretty all-day dining and Bouchee for coffee and pastries. The wine programme is vast, the bar pours generously, and room service runs around the clock.

Spa & Wellness

The Spa at The Post Oak holds its own Forbes five stars, a genuine rarity, with a proper heat circuit, generous relaxation lounges and therapists who work to results rather than script. Book ahead at weekends. The adjacent salon covers event prep, and the outdoor pool with cabanas rounds a treatment out into a half day.

Location

The Galleria's 400-plus shops are five minutes away, but Houston's better afternoon is the Menil Collection and its Rothko Chapel, twenty minutes east and free to enter.

The Verdict

Shoppers working the Galleria, business travellers on the West Loop and anyone celebrating something who wants full-volume American luxury rather than beige corporate polish. It is not for minimalists or budget travellers, and the location suits drivers far better than walkers; almost everything worth seeing in Houston is a car ride away.
